(Drinking Trends) I love a bar that tells a good story, so I was thrilled to find myself immersed in a demi-monde of glamour and misbehaviour at Disrepute, the latest high-flying addition to the Soho drinking scene. From the stylish decor, to the intricately evocative menu, the guest is invited into a world of scandal and infamy.

An exciting new collaboration from the team behind Sovereign Loss and the Barrio group, Disrepute draws on the heritage of its address to create an air of sophisticated misbehavior. Back in the 60’s this was the site of The Kingly Club, where actors such as Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn would rub shoulders with politicians and gangsters as the champagne flowed and careless glances sparked earth-shattering scandal. Most famously the Profumo Affair, which brought the government of the day to its knees, with the revelation that the lover a government minister also shared a bed with a Russian spy.

It was merely the briefest of touches as she walked past him, her high socks sitting firmly at the bottom of her knees seemed to frame her as she walked away. Her scent, warmth and presence seemed to linger for an eternity: an intense, yet crisp, honeyed smell in the air. Deceptively light and penetratingly aromatic effervescence – Juvenescent.

It is upon this bedrock that Disrepute builds its offering, effortlessly embodied by the intriguing menu. Rather than list cocktail ingredients by rote, each drink tells a little story, evoking a mood and tone. A more detailed menu is also offered, but I found it a lot more rewarding to allow myself to be taken on a journey under the expert guidance of the bar staff. While the menu is story-driven, many of the drinks are quite spirit-driven, and here again, the engaging staff are both happy and very able to stray off-piste to suit different palates.

One particularly clever touch at Disrepute is their letter-headed secret notes. Guests are encouraged to pen a note and pass it via the floor staff to a neighbouring table. These messages vary from the cryptic to the flirtatious and apparently, some choice specimens have already attained legendary status!

With its unique lineage, seductive ambiance, fascinating menu and late opening hours, Disrepute promises to quickly establish itself as a firm favourite in the rapidly evolving Soho bar scene.
Secure a seat at the bar to avail of the best of the very experienced bar team, or a table for a more intimate liaison. Cocktails come in at the £10-£14 range, and we recommend booking ahead. Memberships are available to guarantee late entry. Disrepute is open 5pm-3am Monday – Saturday and 5pm – 12:30am Sundays.
