(Drinking Trends) As the issue of waste and in particular plastic waste hots up, it’s very edifying to see clever solutions emerging to the constantly growing problem. Step forward Skipping Rocks Lab, an innovative product development team based out of Imperial College London. Their product Ooho! is a seaweed based membrane that can be used as a water bottle, or more accurately a water ball. It is 100% biodegradable and is even edible (if you’re feeling brave)!

Their recent crowdfund equity drive raised 209% of their target total and with a 74% margin achieved on sales so far, Skipping Rocks Lab is on a mission to make packaging waste disappear.

Ooho! is a sustainable packaging alternative to plastic bottles and cups, made from a seaweed extract. It is entirely biodegradable and so natural you can actually eat it! Ooho sachets are flexible packets of water, drunk by tearing a hole and pouring into your mouth, or consumed whole. Our packaging is cheaper than plastic and can encapsulate any beverage including water, soft drinks, spirits, and even cosmetics.

The cost of each unit is less than £0.01, cheaper than a plastic bottle which can cost up to three times as much. In the UK alone, 35.8m plastic bottles are used every day but only 19.8m recycled. Skipping Rocks’ co-founder, Pierre Paslier, said: “The problem is that a plastic cap or plastic bottle will take 700 years to decompose. Our goal is to match the actual time it’s going to take to consume with the right packaging.”

The company is currently focussing on a replacement for small, single-serving water bottles, but also has plans to create a machine to create the packaging on-site. Paslier said: “We are targeting the 500 ml and smaller packaging size. Whilst we have made Oohos up to 1.5 L in size for testing purposes, and the material retains its strength with this volume, we are focussing on the smaller on-the-go market.

UK consumers can expect to see Ooho! at a wide range of events this summer, and with massive media interest, sound financials and strong backing, this is an innovative product that has potential to become a household staple.
